Swedish sentence construction relies on a fixed word order, verb placement, and grammatical rules that ensure clarity and coherence.

Basic Sentence Structure

Swedish follows a subject-verb-object (SVO) word order in main clauses.

Anna läser en bok.
(Anna reads a book.)

Subject-Verb Inversion in Questions

In yes/no questions, the verb comes before the subject.

Läser Anna en bok? (Does Anna read a book?)
Har du tid? (Do you have time?)

Word Order in Main Clauses

Swedish has a strict word order where the verb is always in the second position. Adverbs often come between the verb and the object.

Anna läser ofta böcker. (Anna often reads books.)

Word Order in Subordinate Clauses

In subordinate clauses, the verb is placed later in the sentence.

Jag vet att Anna ofta läser böcker. (I know that Anna often reads books.)

Definite and Indefinite Articles

Articles in Swedish must match the noun in number and definiteness.

Definite Form:

  • huset (the house)
  • böckerna (the books)

Indefinite Form:

  • ett hus (a house)
  • några böcker (some books)

Negation

Negation is formed by placing inte after the verb.

Jag äter inte kött. (I do not eat meat.)
Han har inte tid. (He does not have time.)

Reflexive Verbs

Reflexive verbs use a reflexive pronoun.

Han tvättar sig. (He washes himself.)

Modal Verbs

Modal verbs appear before the main verb in the infinitive form.

Jag måste arbeta imorgon. (I must work tomorrow.)
Hon kan tala svenska. (She can speak Swedish.)

Common Sentence Connectors

Sentence connectors help build complex sentences.

eftersom (because)
men (but)
därför (therefore)
om (if)

These rules help create clear and grammatically correct Swedish sentences.
