Identifying Sentence Components

A Norwegian sentence consists of different grammatical components that define its structure. These include the subject, verb, object, adverbs, and complements.

Word Order in Main Clauses

Norwegian follows a subject-verb-object (SVO) word order in main clauses. The verb is always in the second position.

Hun liker kaffe.

Word Order in Subordinate Clauses

In subordinate clauses, the verb is placed later in the sentence, after adverbs and other modifiers.

Jeg vet at hun liker kaffe.
(I know that she likes coffee.)

Negation Placement

Negation is formed by placing ikke after the verb in main clauses and before the verb in subordinate clauses.

Examples:
Hun spiser ikke fisk. (She does not eat fish.)
Jeg tror at hun ikke spiser fisk. (I think that she does not eat fish.)

Declarative Sentences

Declarative sentences present statements and follow the standard word order.

Interrogative Sentences

Yes/no questions use verb-subject inversion.

Imperative Sentences

Imperative sentences give commands or instructions.

Adverbs modify verbs and are placed between the verb and the object in main clauses.
