Norwegian sentences follow a consistent structure with clear rules for word order, verb placement, and sentence formation.

Basic Sentence Structure

Norwegian follows a subject-verb-object (SVO) word order in main clauses.

Maria spiser et eple.
(Maria eats an apple.)

Subject-Verb Inversion in Questions

In yes/no questions, the verb comes before the subject.

Spiser Maria et eple? (Does Maria eat an apple?)
Har du tid? (Do you have time?)

Word Order in Main Clauses

The verb is always in the second position in main clauses. Adverbs are placed between the verb and the object.

Maria spiser ofte epler. (Maria often eats apples.)

Word Order in Subordinate Clauses

In subordinate clauses, the verb moves later in the sentence.

Jeg vet at Maria ofte spiser epler. (I know that Maria often eats apples.)

Definite and Indefinite Articles

Articles in Norwegian must match the noun in number and definiteness.

Definite Form:

• huset (the house)
• bøkene (the books)

Indefinite Form:

• et hus (a house)
• noen bøker (some books)

Negation

Negation is formed by placing ikke after the verb.

Jeg spiser ikke kjøtt. (I do not eat meat.)
Han har ikke tid. (He does not have time.)

Reflexive Verbs

Reflexive verbs use a reflexive pronoun.

Han vasker seg. (He washes himself.)

Modal Verbs

Modal verbs appear before the main verb in the infinitive form.
